File Buddy Support folder - The HTML help files, folder templates, and plug-ins.
Documentation
File Buddy‚Ñ¢ 5.0 Read Me - An expanded version of what you are reading now, contact information, and the usual Read Me stuff.
Viewing the Online Help - Instructions for using the new HTML-based online help with versions of the Mac OS prior to 8.5.
File Buddy 5 has been used extensively with Mac OS 8 and 8.1, and to a more limited extent with OS 8.5. So far there are only two known problems: 1) The Finder may get confused and not display the correct icons after using File Buddy to rebuild the desktop. This is due to a bug in the Finder. 2) Folder view information is lost when File Buddy copies a folder.
File Buddy will now use your web browser to view the online help with versions of the OS prior to 8.5.
Changes and Fixes in 5.0b19 December 21, 1998
Changes
File Buddy now attempts to use Internet Config to determine your preferred web browser when linking to Kagi or the home page.
When opening a saved file list, the name of the file with the number of items appended is used for the name of the window.
When dragging an alias into a window, you can now hold down the Command key to have File Buddy use the original.
The template icons are now displayed next to the items in the folder template menu with OS 8.5.
A folder containing help for use with Help Viewer in OS 8.5 can be placed in the Help folder inside the File Buddy Support Folder. If File Buddy finds it, that help is used when the File Buddy Help command is selected. This folder is available for separate download from <http://www.skytag.com/FileBuddy.stuff/FileBuddy5.stuff/FB_home_page.shtml>.
The name of the Cancel button in the broken aliases window now changes to Done once any new links are actually connected to reflect the fact that they can no longer be canceled.
Fixes
A bug introduced in b18 caused the rectangle inverted to select the name in the file list to be too far to the left for items in expanded folders. Fixed.
Opening a saved list could result in a meaningless title for the window. Fixed.
Closing an info window with multiple items in it could munge memory and cause a crash later with OS 8.5. Fixed.
A search for items to fix aliaes could return duplicate items. Fixed.
File Buddy now attempts to use Internet Config to determine your preferred web browser.
Fixes
A bug introduced in b18 caused the rectangle inverted to select the name in a file list to be too far to the left for items in expanded folders. Fixed.
If the Option key is down when items are dropped on a droplet, it will open the droplet's Options dialog before processing the items dropped on it. Changes apply to that run only. To make them the default for that droplet, open the droplet by double-clicking and use the Options... button.
A drop-down menu button was added to the info window. The commands on this menu provide additional actions that can be applied to items in the list. The current commands are to delete the resource and data forks.
Modified the layouts of the Change Names and Rename Sequentially dialogs.
Fixes
The info window would not display an item's custom icon if there were not both small and large versions of the icon. Fixed.
Items in file lists were not being updated properly when the name was changed with the info window. Fixed.
The rectangle inverted to select the name in the file list was calculated incorrectly if the name column was just barely wide enough to contain the name without condensing it. Fixed.
Disk selection dialogs (such as Check Alias) would resize to a height that was too short if there were less than 3 disks in the list (the intended minimum for the list height). Fixed.
Some people experienced a crash as File Buddy tried to display duplicate files. Fixed.
A bug caused some - if not all - users running the 68K version to experience a crash when File Buddy quits with a version of the OS prior to 8.5. Fixed.
For users of OS 8.5, items in the item navigation pop-up menu of the info window now display the item's real icon instead of a generic icon.
Fixes
When using OS 8.5, no icon was being drawn in file lists for items with no small icon (e.g., StuffIt self-extracting archives), and crashes could result when such items were in the list. Fixed.
